Kewzing

At an altitude of 1700 meters Kewzing is a very beautiful and quiet Sikkimese village. Kewzing in local language means “the land of wheat Fields”. The village’s scant population comprises of two hundred people, primarily Sikkimese-Bhutia community and is blessed with nature’s bounties. The pollution is almost zero here with its largest area covered with lush green forests. The area is home to some of the exotic birds of Sikkim. The village is surrounded with cardamom and tea plantations. The village is blessed by Buddhist monasteries on all the four sides with Tashiding monastery in the south-west, Mangbru and Pemayangtse Monastery in West, Ralang Monastery in southeast, Doling Monastery in east and Bon Monastery towards the North. If you seek respite from the busy city life, Kewzing is where you want to be.


Activities


Village walk: You can go for blissful village walk in and around Kewzing village. A guided walk to the nearby villages like Bakhim, Barfung, Doling would be very nice experience to know about the rural culture of Sikkim.

Day hike: Adventurous visitors can go for one day hike to the Maenam and Tendong hills of Sikkim. The walk through the sanctuary will be a nice experience. You will find many species of birds in the sanctuary. This area is famous for birdwatching. Once you reach at the hilltop the panoramic view of the surrounding area will simply make you speechless. During the winter this hilltop gets snow and looks lovely.

Birdwatching: This area has a rich diversity of various bird species. Here at Kewzing there are many locations where you can go for the sightings. During this tour lucky visitors can get a sighting of endangered Red Panda which is state animal of Sikkim.

Learning Sikkimese cuisines: You can learn cooking various Sikkimese dishes at the place you are staying. Good thing is that the cuisines are prepared from fully organic vegetables cultivated in the nearby villages.

The general temperature in Kewzing stays cold all time. During summer, mercury hardly crosses 23°C in daytime and during night it stays around 15°C. The average temperature in winter is 14°C here. This place never gets snowfall. During monsoon this area gets good amount of rainfall.

Permit

Indian tourists don’t need any permit to visit this place. Foreign tourists need an Inner Line Permit to visit this place but they can get that on arrival at the Melli check point which is the entry point of Sikkim. It’s a hassle free process and takes only 20 min to complete the procedure. One must carry two photocopies of his/her passport and valid visa along with 2 copies of his/her passport size photo while applying. For further query please contact us.

Custom

While visiting in any religious place please remove your footwear before entering into the main temple. Also it is advisable to wear modest clothes while visiting any religious place. People will happily pose for a picture but please ask them before taking any picture.

*Please note that in a Sikkimese tradition while a guest is leaving they offer Khada (scarf) to their guest as a sign of good luck. If they offer you such then please close your palms together to reply as a thank you gesture.

Safety

Sikkim is India’s one of the few states where the crime rate is very low. Not only towards tourists, people have deep respects for each other also. But for any safety concern, you can share your query with local police station (dial 100 only).

Health

You won’t find any mosquitoes here in Kewzing. Due to alpine climate tourist generally doesn’t get sick. But if you are allergic to plants and pollen then take precaution. The local hotels and restaurants serve safe drinking water but if you are not sure then you can buy packaged drinking water almost at everyplace.
